another great event, proper mountain biking at its best. great organisation and marshalls. a credit to all involved Date: 14 Feb 2009 Time: 20:56:20 Remote User: Comments This was my first ride in any event and I rode the 18km track.....I would say i wasn't prepared for what was in store for me and was pushed to the limit....about 10 hours later I am feeling proud of my achievement and look forward to entering more events as a result. Congratulations to the organisers and as a suggestion maybe march would be better as the rain seems like it impacts every event and how great it would have been on a fine day. Fantastic officials...although the "last 3.5 km down hill might be a slight exageration guys :).....thanks for the motivating comments, they were much appreciated. Ric Date: 14 Feb 2009 Time: 23:46:21 Remote User: Comments This was my first Black Stump event and loved every minute of it. The marshalls were great and gave everyone encouragement. To the ladies in the R&R tent - big thanks for letting me keep dry and for making me feel welcome and less nervous.Great tracks - loved the mud - well maybe not all of iy. lol Highlight of my day apart from finishing the 18km route, was the friendliness of organisers & competitors alike. Big ups to the wee lad doing the 18kms on his own - he must have been all of 8 years old. Will be back - Janine (Wellington) #1003

Date: 15 Feb 2009 Time: 09:08:53 Remote User: Comments Great day! 2d time and really enjoyed it. What makes it special for me is the 'local' feel & involvement - all the way down to the school kids being a strong part of it at the tent village. WELL DONE & WE'LL BE BACK NEXT YEAR! Jon Date: 15 Feb 2009 Time: 10:06:13 Remote User: Comments Hello Maria and Graeme. Thank you so much for a great event, I have done some racing in South africa and England and I have done a few rides in New Zealand and this is by far the best race I have done out all the other countries. Maria you and graeme are so friendly and down to earth. The event is so friendly and so chilled out. I love the mud and I hoped for mud on the day and I got it. I will see you all again next year. Jonty. Date: 15 Feb 2009 Time: 15:03:23 Remote User: Comments Well done Maria and Graham, another successful event. Shame about the rain, but I think it would be boring for the riders without it??!! Of course I am speaking as a person who greets you all at the end of the ride (not one who rides it!). To the riders, as always, it was a pleasure to see your happy, muddy faces as you crossed the finish line and to hear the positive comments. Thanks also to the kind men who offered (and gave) Debbie and I Valentines Day hugs - they were much appreciated - sharing the mud (oops, I mean love) and finally to the lovely lady who came across the finish line in tears, I really hope your elbow is feeling a little better today and you managed to warm up a little in the car on the way home. Happy mountain biking - Jeanine (one of the friendly locals). Date: 15 Feb 2009 Time: 15:13:53 Remote User: Comments What a great race. I have to say, 'the most fun you can have on a mountain bike!' Sadly, I only completed 26km of the 40km track due to a fall. I will definitely be back next year to finish. Thanks to all the Marshals, and St Johns volunteers for being there for the few unfortunate riders :) Shane Easton. Date: 15 Feb 2009 Time: 15:32:49 Remote User: Comments Hi Guys Definitely no drought in the Waikato this year! Marshalls fantastic as always and I have a pink ribbon as a momento. Bring on 2010 Phil Date: 15 Feb 2009 Time: 16:16:58 Remote User: Comments I thought the event was really well organised and impressed with the number of marshals you had on the course. It is a shame the rain led to the tracks getting churned up to become unrideable in parts but can't blame you for that. Just a suggestion for the future, if it is cold and wet at the start, don't make those of us who have made the effort to turn up on time wait around for late entrants, start on time and let them catch up later. Malcolm Thomas Date: 15 Feb 2009 Time: 16:47:15 Remote User: Comments great day......except I asked myself a few times that I took up mountainbiking for enjoyment!!!!!.......YEAH RIGHT! Thanks to al the marshalls who always had something positive to say Cheers Ian Date: 15 Feb 2009 Time: 17:20:11 Remote User: Comments "Oh my god"... That's what I was saying to myself about 15km into my ride, That was my 1st event ever and it was unbelievable hahahahahaha, I'd like to thank the lady who was at the front gate asking if you had your entry form for the great words of encouragement, I'd entered the 18km but thought I might do the 30km and she said "Be a man", lol so I did the 30... I tell you I was talking about her a fair bit around the course lol.... thanks to all other riders and everyone for making it a great day. :-))))P.S I am sure you mis-counted the distance....my legs are telling me it was sixty! Richard. Te Puke Date: 15 Feb 2009 Time: 18:13:50 Remote User: Comments Awesome day! This was the first time I've done the blackstump and took the 18km loop. I kept telling myself I love hills and smiled the whole ride long! Awesome day! Thanks heaps! :-) Date: 15 Feb 2009 Time: 20:44:06 Remote User: Comments Thanks for the opportunity to do a real mountain bike ride - don't care much for man made circuits and gravel roads this was a fair dinkum ride. Thanks also to the helpful St Johns who patched me up long enough to finish and again to make it to A&E for some sewing up. I now have a trophy I will always remember - another scar. Well worth every minute (1st timer). I will be back! Thanks again for an awesome event. - can't wait till next time. Neil - Whangaparaoa Date: 15 Feb 2009 Time: 20:53:20 Remote User: Comments Fourth time at Black Stump and still doing 30km and loving it ! one day we might get a fine day (and no rain the day or night beforehand!)but i'll still be returning no matter what the weather. gives us big kids an excuse to get really muddy anyway ! and on a different note a big thankyou to the organisers and marshalls and everyone else involved,it just keeps on getting better, just a pity my ride time doesn't but when you spend too much time mountainrunning with bike or on your bum in mud i guess i never will keep up with the first couple of guys (but i will settle for 3rd...lol). this year due to the rain beforehand and during some of us just went out to have a good time and complete the course, knowing that times were not important, surviving with both rider and bike intact was,so mission accomplished. roll on 2010 ! david owen 3092 Date: 15 Feb 2009 Time: 21:21:35 Remote User: Comments MTBs shod with mud tires always look the bizzo and having to use every last knobbly bit on 'em is what the Black Stump has come to mean to me. Its one of the best races around and I reckon if it was dry & dusty, everyone would get all serious trying to ride fast times.... where's the fun in that? Gimme da mud !! Thanks to all organisers , helpers & sponsors. Will be back for my 5th in 2010 Date: 16 Feb 2009 Time: 06:21:22 Remote User: Comments As a first timer I thought the 30km would be a good warm up for some events in March, man was I in for a surprise!! Good track, shame about the weather and the mud which made some of it un-rideable. Thanks heaps to all the Marshalls it was great to have your encouragement. A well organised event and marked out course, I will probably be back next year! Philip #3136(Waitakere) Date: 16 Feb 2009 Time: 07:01:12 Remote User: Comments I left my helmet behind - wondering if it was handed in. Bell and grey in colour. NO visor attachde at the front. my race number 3013 regards Andrew Macdonald 021 270 2115 Date: 16 Feb 2009 Time: 07:51:17 Remote User: Comments Thanks Maria, Graeme and your wonderful team of people for sharing your part of the world, and doing so which such generosity of spirit. Saturday was our family's first attendance of a MTB event, so participation was a complete leap of faith. The dad and two young chaps had no idea what was ahead of them, which was possibly a good thing. Elder son (13) coped well, rode off into the adventure and mud alone and wants to have a go at the 18km next year. The younger (11), whose idea the whole caper was, needed some reminding from Dad near the end that the only way to the finish was under his own steam, but finish he did, with a very tired smile, a nod to the "next year?" question, and, once he'd warmed up and eaten, some very amusing stories about riders he and Dad had shared the track with. Thanks everyone, and thank you Lord for the mud! Signed, a very proud mum. Date: 16 Feb 2009 Time: 08:03:56 Remote User: Comments had a great day loved the 40k course too it was a good challenge and the rain added ahole new element too it too. will be back next year for another crack Date: 16 Feb 2009 Time: 09:29:24 Remote User: Comments Congratulations to you. That was great fun, real mountainbiking.Your marshals were fantastic, handing over a beer at the finish was brilliant. That was my first go.My team (The Beagle Boys)will be there in force next year.Only two of us had a go this time. Loved the track, plenty of tough stuff and fast stuff, brilliant. Thanks again. Date: 16 Feb 2009 Time: 09:36:18 Remote User: Comments Great day but whose idea was it to go thru a turnip patch!!The event should be called the Waikato drought breaker as it always rains enough to cut up the course. It will make Colville a real doddle Date: 16 Feb 2009 Time: 12:58:20 Remote User: Comments Awesome race, I don't think so many things on my bike have ceased working as did during that race, but the mud and rain only added to the enjoyment. A better time than I imagined - 3:11 for 40km. Date: 16 Feb 2009 Time: 13:15:28 Remote User: Comments What a ride! Did the 30km last year on XC tyres which was interesting!, went for the 40km this year and slapped on the full mud tyres... What a difference! Every downhill totally rideable and most of the not too steep uphills rideable too, until the cramp set in! Thanks muchly to everyone involved especially the guys who got me through the cramp with cold water and an energy sachet. The hardest thing I've done in a very long time but what a feeling to have completed it. Never thought I'd be so proud to have a pink ribbon :-) Back next year for sure. Date: 16 Feb 2009 Time: 15:10:39 Remote User: Comments It was my first time at a mountainbike event and I'm sure I asked you to be gentle with me but NOOOOO, you had to get in touch with the rain God's and make sure I sent as much time on my butt as my tyres on the downhills AAANNND to make matters worse when I got to the finish I learned it was a figure of 8 and I was only half way around. Joking aside, what a blast. Great course, great company of riders, great atmosphere. Call me Arnie coz' "I'll be back!" Steve G. Date: 17 Feb 2009 Time: 07:36:02 Remote User: Comments 2nd time doing the 18 (took me two years to forget the mud from last time)and really enjoyed it again. A great mix of terrain and surfaces (some of which I brought home with me!). Beer at the end was brilliant! Another great job by your team! Date: 17 Feb 2009 Time: 08:13:12 Remote User: Comments this was my 1st event i thought it would be a warm up for piopio i was wrong it was tough but awsome fun in the mud i loved every muddy moment 30km never has been so long did last 10km without rear derailer but who cares. what a feeling of achievment to finish. be back next year for sure for more mud. Date: 17 Feb 2009 Time: 11:46:36 Remote User: Comments Awesome ride despite the weather. The hill training certainly helped prior to event. will be back next year for sure. My name-time hasn't come up yet I see. Will check later. cheers Dave Chadwick (18km) Date: 17 Feb 2009 Time: 14:38:16 Remote User: Comments It was truly horrible. The best I can say to improve it is no mud please. Date: 17 Feb 2009 Time: 20:18:02 Remote User: Comments Great event as usual, a few hiccups but hey thats part of your "event organisers adventure" the rest of us will enjoy the mud, the casual, laid back and friendly atmosphere for years to come - lets hope its never dry and dusty! One question though (on behalf of the hundreds out there waiting in anticipation..) when will the RESULTS be ready do you think? And who said it wasn't a race.....but an adventure ride for most people - "Yeah right" (maybe get Tui breweries for your sponsor next year, then you and they could use "The Black Stump will be dry as bone next year - Yeah right". Thanks once again Graeme & Maria and all the Glen Massey team of people. James G Date: 17 Feb 2009 Time: 20:39:27 Remote User: Comments Yes it sure is a challenge,Do you do a rain dance the night before?2nd time, great atmosphere, nice people and mud for Africa. Lots of pushing,it will make Colville seem like a nana ride. It was really cold at the start, perhaps latecomers should have to catch up. Date: 17 Feb 2009 Time: 21:09:03 Remote User: Comments 1st time and I left wet, extremely puffed, very sore shoulder and a cracked rib. Next year I will shout myself a new front tyre and enjoy it even more. Had a ball and can't wait for 2010. Date: 17 Feb 2009 Time: 21:46:51 Remote User: Comments 3rd time around. this time the 30km as done the 12 and 18 (all in the wet)Great as always. The mud just makes it better and levels the field more.Would hate to do in the dry.Cant thank everyone enough. great organisers, marshalls and helpers.will try for better time next year as all bike parts might be working and might be fitter. Rain and mud are not really my thing, however, I did have fun! I also agree with the guy who made the comment about late riders, If they can't be organised enough to be there on time please don't make us wait in the cold for them. If starting time is 10am thats when you start. All in all great time. thanks :-) Date: 18 Feb 2009 Time: 19:30:09 Remote User: Comments Hi I was a first time rider of the 18km ride. Date: 20 Feb 2009 Time: 10:23:50 Remote User: Comments what a day!!! i had the best ride ever, 30km. wet! just enough mud to test your bike skills but still firm. it is a must ride every year. well done for a great homegrown event BLOODY AWESOME ROD PERCIVAL WHITIANGA Date: 20 Feb 2009 Time: 14:50:22 Remote User: Comments The most fun you can have with your clothes on! Awesome day guys and bring back the mud next year - wouldn't be the same without it. We were first time riders and sponsors and will be back for both next year, in fact we'll even go as far to say right now that you can expect to have MuscleWorx Massage Clinics and Imagine Media on board as 2010 sponsors as well. Well done to all who rode, organised, helped, and supported! Date: 21 Feb 2009 Time: 09:53:31 Remote User: Comments Well 2nd time around the 30 K race. Maybe fast rolling XC race tyres were not the ideal choice. Funny I said that to myself last year but made the mistake of believing the weather forecast- sunny ???. 25ks in had a big humour failure and swore never to come back. But what a great track so no doubt back again next year. The best hot pork roll I have ever tasted. Great organisation and cheery marshalls Date: 21 Feb 2009 Time: 21:22:52 Remote User: Comments Best cycling event Ive done .....my first. Took on 40km and completed, bruised battered and cramped.Brilliant. Work on the time , bike and weight for next year and try shave 30mins. An awesome challenge and credit to orgasnisers and all. mark
